Understanding how IMAP works

What is IMAP, and why do we need it?

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a secure and common way for apps to read emails from your inbox without making any changes. When you connect your email using IMAP:

  • We can read your inbox to find relevant emails (e.g. receipts)

  • We cannot send emails

  • We cannot delete or change your emails

  • Your emails always remain in your email account

You can think of IMAP as read-only access to your inbox.

Why should I enable IMAP?

Some email providers require you to enable IMAP manually before other apps are allowed to access your inbox.
If IMAP is disabled:

  • The connection will fail

  • We cannot find your receipts

What information do I need?

Enabling IMAP takes just a minute and can usually be done in your email provider’s settings. To connect your email via IMAP, you may need:

  • Your email address

  • Your email password or an app password

  • Your incoming mail server (IMAP) address

How do I enable IMAP?

The steps depend on your email provider, but you’ll usually need to:

  • Open your email provider’s settings

  • Find ‘Email settings’ or ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’

  • Ensure that IMAP is enabled

  • Save your changes

  • If you’re using a work email, your IT team may need to enable IMAP for you.

Is this secure?

Yes. We use IMAP with secure encryption and read-only access, so there’s no need to worry.

Need help?

If you’re unsure where to find your IMAP settings:
- Search online for “IMAP settings for your email provider”
- Alternatively, we recommend contacting your email provider’s support or IT team.
