International regulations impose very strict rules on banks regarding accounts opened by individuals with tax residence outside Netherlands.
We are able to open a Shine account for individuals who are tax residents outside Netherlands under certain conditions:
Opening a business account for an existing company : unfortunately, we cannot accept tax residency outside Netherlands when depositing capital or setting up a new business.
Only for certain countries : banking regulations require us to comply with international sanctions rules.
If these conditions are not met, we are unfortunately unable to accept account applications from these individuals at this time.
Conditions to be considered tax resident in the Netherlands
Dutch tax residency is not based on a fixed checklist, the authority looks at where your overall centre of life is located. No single factor decides it on its own; they are weighed together.
Personal ties: where your home, family, and day-to-day life are based
Economic ties: where you work, run a business, or hold Dutch bank accounts/employment income
Time spent in the Netherlands: a relevant factor, but the 183-day per year threshold alone does not determine residency as it does in some other countries
Municipal registration (BRP): registering at a Dutch address is treated as strong evidence of residency and will generally trigger a Dutch tax file, even before the other factors are assessed"
We want Shine to be accessible to everyone, and we are therefore working to ensure that more people can open an account too.
